We saw spurious hits disappear after banning PTFEβlined caps and waterproof field books β HDPE caps only, pencil on labels, and a trip blank per cooler (EPA guidance: https://www.epa.gov/pfas/pfas-sampling-guidance). PFAS loves to hitchhike like glitter, so we change nitrile gloves every bottle and keep sample gear doubleβbagged until use. On SUVA, inline UV254 works well but fouling can fake spikes; a quick daily wipe and a weekly check against the bench UV254 keeps the control loop honest.
Biggest PFAS false-positive we chased was from our own βblue iceβ packs; we switched to frozen DI in HDPE bottles and a dedicated PFAS-only cooler, and the noise vanished. Also, sample order matters β βPFAS first, VOCs secondβ β and no sunscreen/bug spray on crew; minor hassle, big payoff.
